To mark World Environment Day 2025, we’d like to share a short documentary about a recent project we were proud to be involved in — a native woodland and wetland restoration effort in Cloonlavis, Co. Mayo, in partnership with the Gaelic Woodland Project.
Earlier this spring, a team of Shareridge staff joined volunteers and ecologists on site to plant native Irish trees — oak, alder, birch, willow, hawthorn and spindle — on mineral and alluvial soils bordering a former bog. Just as importantly, we supported efforts to block old drains and allow the bogland to naturally re-wet over time, restoring a vital wetland ecosystem.
This project is part of a long-term vision to create a living, breathing forest that will stand as a memorial to the Great Famine by 2045 — two hundred years after that defining moment in Irish history. But beyond the history, this is also about the future: building biodiversity, absorbing carbon, restoring soil and water health, and creating a shared space for education and reflection.
On this World Environment Day, themed “Beat Plastic Pollution”, we’re reminded that caring for the planet goes beyond reducing waste — it’s about restoring balance. Healthy ecosystems help filter pollutants, buffer against climate extremes, and reduce our dependency on synthetic materials by keeping natural systems intact.
At Shareridge, we believe environmental responsibility doesn’t stop at the office door. It’s something we bring into the field — literally — by taking part in projects that combine hands-on impact with long-term vision.
Huge credit to the Gaelic Woodland Project team for their leadership, energy, and commitment to restoring Ireland’s native habitats. We were honoured to play a small part.
Watch the short film to learn more about the project, meet the volunteers, and see what hope looks like when it’s planted in the ground.
